Exercise, flying and sun after rhinoplasty: when is it safe?
After rhinoplasty, patients often ask the same questions: When can I exercise again? Is flying allowed? And what about sun exposure or tanning beds?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure involving bone, cartilage and soft tissue. These structures need time to heal, especially during the first weeks after surgery.
In this blog, I explain what activities are safe and when you can gradually resume them after rhinoplasty.
1. Exercise after rhinoplasty
Physical activity is healthy, but during the first weeks after surgery it is important to take it easy.
First 2 weeks
-
no intense physical activity
-
no sports
-
light walking is allowed
After about 3–4 weeks
-
light exercise is usually possible
-
such as gentle cycling or light gym workouts
After 6 weeks
-
most sports can be resumed
-
contact sports still require caution
After about 3 months
-
contact sports such as football, hockey or martial arts are usually safe again
Exercise temporarily raises blood pressure and can increase swelling, which is why activities should be resumed gradually.
2. Flying after rhinoplasty
Many patients wonder when it is safe to fly again. In general:
-
short flights are usually possible after about 2 weeks
-
long flights are often possible after 3–4 weeks
This waiting period is recommended because:
-
swelling may still be present
-
pressure changes can cause discomfort
-
your first follow-up appointment usually takes place during the first week
If needed, this is always discussed individually during your consultation or follow-up visit.
3. Sun exposure and tanning beds after rhinoplasty
After surgery, the skin of the nose is temporarily more sensitive to sunlight.
During the first weeks
-
avoid direct sun exposure on the nose
-
use high-SPF sunscreen
During the first 2–3 months
-
avoid tanning beds
-
excessive sun exposure may increase swelling or cause skin discoloration
Once the skin has fully recovered, normal sun exposure is possible again, although sun protection remains important.
4. Wearing glasses after rhinoplasty
Although not directly related to sports or travel, this is another common question. During the first weeks it is advisable to:
-
avoid heavy glasses resting on the nose
-
prevent pressure on the nasal bridge
If necessary, glasses can temporarily be supported with tape or a special support.
5. Listen to your body
Recovery after rhinoplasty differs from person to person. Swelling may last longer depending on factors such as:
-
skin thickness
-
extent of the correction
-
individual healing patterns
The most important advice is to resume activities gradually and listen to your body.
Conclusion
After rhinoplasty, most daily activities can gradually be resumed, but sports, flying and sun exposure require temporary caution. Giving your body time to heal helps achieve a stable, natural and long-lasting result.
