Rhinoplasty recovery: what to expect week by week

One of the most common questions during consultations is: “What does recovery after rhinoplasty actually look like?” Recovery happens in phases and takes time. At the same time, it’s helpful to know what to realistically expect in the first days and weeks.

Below, I walk you through the recovery process, including the aftercare we advise in our clinic.
Hieronder geef ik een realistisch beeld van het herstel, inclusief de nazorg zoals wij die in de kliniek adviseren.

Day 0–3: the first days after surgery

After the procedure, you can usually go home about 3 hours after surgery.

During the first 72 hours, you may experience:

  • swelling of the nose
  • bruising around the eyes
  • nasal congestion
  • a tight or stiff feeling

What’s important during this phase:

  • cooling the eye/nose area (every hour for about 15 minutes during the first 2 days)
  • sleeping with your head elevated (using an extra pillow or neck support)
  • getting enough rest

A practical tip: using a small bag of frozen peas (with a tissue in between) works well and feels comfortable.

You can also start:

  • prescribed pain medication
  • nasal rinsing (such as saline solution) to keep the nose clear

Week 1: early recovery and check-up

During the first week:

  • swelling gradually decreases
  • bruising may still be visible
  • you will wear dressings on your nose

You may also notice:

  • temporary numbness in the upper lip
  • reduced sense of smell and taste
  • slight nose bleeding
  • sensitivity in the front teeth

After about 7–8 days:

  • you return to the clinic for a check-up
  • dressings and any splints are removed
  • you can start wearing make-up again

We usually recommend taking at least one week off from work or study.

Week 2: getting back to normal

In the second week:

  • most bruising disappears
  • swelling continues to decrease
  • your energy levels improve

Most patients feel presentable again and can resume light social activities. Taking a second week off can be helpful, but is not always necessary.

Week 3–5: visible improvement

During this phase:

  • the shape of the nose becomes clearer
  • the nose feels less stiff
  • light physical activity can be resumed

Important:

  • avoid pressure on the nose
  • continue proper nasal hygiene

Some swelling is still present, especially at the tip.

Week 6: back to daily routine

Around 6 weeks:

  • the nose feels more stable
  • most daily activities can be resumed
  • a large part of the swelling has subsided

Please note: wearing glasses is usually discouraged during the first 6 weeks

Maand 3: the result becomes visible

After approximately 3 months:

  • the nose looks more natural
  • most of the result is visible
  • mild swelling may still be present

At this stage, many patients feel confident about their appearance.

Maand 6–8: refinement and final check-up

The final result develops gradually.

During this phase:

  • remaining swelling disappears
  • the nasal tip refines further
  • the structures stabilise

Around 8 months, a final check-up takes place at the clinic.

Why aftercare is so important

A successful result depends not only on the surgery, but also on the healing process.

Key advice:

  • avoid bending and heavy lifting during the first week
  • gradually return to normal activities
  • follow aftercare instructions carefully
  • contact the clinic if you have any concerns

You are always welcome to reach out or visit the clinic if you have questions during recovery.

Conclusion

Recovery after rhinoplasty happens in phases. The first weeks require rest and care, while the final result develops over several months. By taking the recovery process seriously, you increase the chance of achieving a natural, balanced and long-lasting result.
